The Coke Machine

The Coke MachineThe Coke Machine takes readers deep inside the Coca-Cola Company and its international franchisees to reveal how they became the number one brand in the world, and just how far they’ll go to stay there.

From India and Mexico, where bottling plants are suspected of decimating water supplies and spreading toxic pollution; to Colombia, where Coke union organizers are being killed for trying to protect their rights; to America, where super-sizing and exclusive soda contracts with schools have fueled a childhood obesity crisis, The Coke Machine exposes the costs behind one extremely influential company’s quest for international success.

Nice interview on the Jay Thomas show; I quite drinking Diet Coke last year, and I’m glad I did. America’s obsession with this junk is unhealthy. We don’t buy ANY soda products anymore in my household.

Keep up the good work, Mr. Blanding!

Enjoyed hearing the interview with you on Kansas City Public Radio earlier today. Look forward to reading your book. While I was listening I passed by a huge Coca-Cola billboard along I-35 in downtown Kansas City, featuring a boy in a baseball uniform drinking from a bottle of the caramel-colored stuff.

Would love to cut this crap out of my life too? Have you replaced your Coke with something else? I just find it so hard to just drink water all the time?
Thanks! Julie

After reading this book we quit buying Coca-Cola products. It’s so disgusting that all these big corporations care about is the almighty dollar;and the hell with the human race.Julie I drink a lot of iced tea now.If there’s an expose about tea plantations I guess I’m in trouble.

Good morning Mr.Blanding,

My name is Sara Ortiz Ospina, I am currently a student at the University
of Lethbridge in Alberta.
LAst semester, Lethbridge Public Interest Group presented The Coca Cola
Case. We started then a group to create awareness about the company. Coca
Cola also has a monopoly in our campus, they have a contract for at least
a year. (Our main goal would be to change the contract)

We were looking for a speaker for this topic, and I heard you talking in
CBC News,Sunday Edition.
Please, if you are interested contact me.()

I am looking forward to hear from you,

Best Regards,

Sara

I love it! Yes! I’ve been telling my elementary school students about the truth behind a lot of the crap they ingest- thinking it’s benign instead of carcenigous.

The fact is much of what we consider to be “American” is a LIE… We are playing poker without a poker face… We smile not realizing we are by default causing instability, poverty and exploitation in exchange for our “conveniences”. From the Native American Holocaust/landgrab (yet we celebrate the Louisiana Purchase and put Andrew Jackson on the $5 bill) to Slavery which allowed companies like Bank of America which used to be Fleet, AIG and Aetna which all made HUGE profits insuring slaves, and other atrocities……

But yes everybody has their own entry and exist into JUSTICE. The point is to NOT just STOP AT COCA COLA… there’s also WALMART, Shell gasoline, Monsanto- which gave tons of genetically modified seeds and produce to HAITI after the earthquake… which will mess up their soil and force them to constantly have to buy more seeds from Monsanto….
McDonald- which is destroying forests in the Amazon to grow SOY/chicken feed, etc… the list goes on and on…

But most people are unwilling to REALLY see the forest for the trees.. because they didn’t expect to be the logger… yes, we think we are doing neutral- natural things like buying a stuffed toy or a new bookbag or a bottle of Coke … but there is a hidden cost.

Indeed… we think if we can no longer buy Ray Bans… then WHO AM I? To change our behavior would be getting to the CORE of who we thought we were up until this point. Who are YOU?

Well… I love seeing blockbuster movies while eating popcorn (almost all corn is genetically modified and has been for YEARS) and drinking Coke (a multi-national corporation which poisons wells and will make you fat).
I love wearing nice clothes (95% of all clothes are made overseas and mostly in sweatshops) etc…..

What’s my point… we will have to sacrifice… the lie .. for a brighter reality and a new TRUTH and responsibility….

Most people are UNWILLING to do this. They are clinging on to the lie for dear life.. but it’s all crumbling… foreclosed homes, clipped credit limits… no more unlimited data plans on our smart phones.. little by little we are being weened off… but it will soon CRASH so it’s better if we start opening up our eyes and hearts… instead of having this false reality snatched away from us by the same companies that have brainwashed us into believing we need these …..
sodas, clothes, designer sunglasses, etc. focring us to pay higher and higher prices for them… Remember when a bag of chips was 25 cents? lol

It’s so much bigger than something to replace your Coke habit. LOL…
Coke isn’t milk… and even milk is not good for you either…
but again .. these are autonomic responses… we’ve been programed …

But we need to reboot ourselves.. then the corporations will REALLY be scared:)

I have more about this and education reform on millions-served.com
enjoy!

In Canada, the soft drink companies sign deal with school, university, National Park, etc. that removed all the free normal water fountain in the corridor and washroom of the schools, in exchange for installing soft drink vending machine. People would not have the possibility of drinking tap water from fountain any more and when thirsty they would have only the choice of vending machine.

I heard about the early use of cocaine in coke. How interesting to know the coca leaf still used in the drink decaffeinated as well. InNew York State, a member of the Coca Cola board of directors appointed NYC Schools Chancellor this month. I would like to know more about what you find out about these folks in your investigation. Cathie Black sat on the board since 1993 resigned 11/2010 when appointed chancellor though she has to still be approved for a waiver because she lacks formal credentials in education and experience in public schools. Any information you share helpfu. Thanks

I saw your book near the end of my lunch hour and only got to read the inside of the jacket. I intend to read it soon. It freaks me out sometimes how I can’t get off of the Pepsi and Coke. I can’t never go more than 1.5 days without it. It is as if it was an essential ingredient in part of my meals. What is even more interesting is that I am not particularly interested in drinking it from a plastic bottle. But if it comes out of a machine with carbonation and ice, I have to get it.

Pretty much, I think that globalization sucks. I think that it will only serve to make the rest of the world hate us even more. Before globalization, the world probably just hated us because we were properous. With globalization, they still hate us because we are prosperous AND hate us because our corporations invade their country and destroy the people, culture and environment. American globalization is like a foreign power making war on other countries without having to use American tanks or missiles.

American globalization is also like rich America waging war upon poor America by allowing the poisons of other countries products and foods to invade us.
